DESCRIPTION

Related to the Marrows family, grows on the vines and have large yellow flowers with prickly leaves.

HISTORY AND ORIGIN

Originated in Northern Argentina.  The names comes from Greek "pepon".

BUYING AND STORAGE

Select pumpkin with hard thick shell that feel heavy for their size.  Avoid pumpkins that have soft spots and over excessive to the skin.  Keep pumpkins in a cool, dry, dark place and will keep up to 4 weeks.

PREPARATION AND USE

Cut the required amount off the whole pumpkin and remove the seeds.  Can be steamed, microwaved, baked and serve as a vegetables or added to casseroles, soups, and sauce.  As pumpkins are a hard pumpkin to cut, it is preferably to be cut before purchasing.

VARIETY

BUTTERNUT:  A bulb shaped-bottom with a slightly narrow neck.  There is no need to peel when roasting.

JAPANESE:  A medium size, very attractive pumpkin with blue-green skin and a yellow-orange flesh.

PAWPAW:  Shaped and colour like a pawpaw.  A moisture flesh than the other varieties.  Great for making pumpkin pie.  

QUEENSLAND BLUE:  A large pumpkin with blue-grey skin and orange-golden flesh.

JARRAHDALE:  A light blue-grey skin and a very rich deep orange flesh.

BABY BLUE:  A small pumpkin with pale grey-blue skin and a shape like a coconut.

BLUE MAX:  Has a blue-grey skin and a dry dense flesh.

TROMBONE:  Very long and curved with a bulb bottom, golden-brown skin and a yellow flesh.

HUBBARD:  A pear shape pumpkin.

ORANGE MINIKIN:  Miniature pumpkin about 6-8cm in diameter.  A deep orange colour skin and a soft orange flesh.

GOLDEN NUGGET:  Miniature pumpkin with a deep orange skin and flesh with a nutty flavour.

SWEET DUMPLING:  Miniature pumpkin with a green and white strips skin with cream flesh.

SWEET MISCHIEF:   Miniature pumpkin slightly larger than the Sweet Dumplings with the same texture.
