Persimmons are round with a smooth, bright orange colour with a shiny skin. It
also has a dry green calyx at the stem end. It's shaped like a tomato.
 | HISTORY AND ORIGIN
|
Persimmons are originated in Japan. The name means 'food of the gods'. It was also
known as the 'apple of the Orient'. Persimmons was then introduced in Australia where they
called it "Kaki", but that leads to some confusion.
 | BUYING AND STORAGE
|
Select firm, plump fruit with smooth skin and brightly coloured. Avoid any fruit
that has undamaged skin. Persimmons can be ripen at room temperature until it is soft as
jelly. But remember, when they are ripe you must eat them as soon as possible and to be
kept in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
 | PREPARATION AND USE

Rinse and peel if desired. Eat fresh in hand or use in desserts and salads. Can
also be used in making pies, cakes and jams.
