Chive

Also call:  Garlic Chives, Onion Chives, Rush Leeks

DESCRIPTION

The chives is a small relative of the onion and garlic family.  Onion chives has a round tubular leaves and can grow up to 40cm when matures with the aroma flavour of an onion.  The Garlic chives has flat plump leaves with blades like a grass and has a mild garlic aroma flavour.

HISTORY AND ORIGIN

The Chinese has used chives in about 300BC and there are known in Mediterranean lands before Christian times.

BUYING AND STORAGE

Select fresh chives in bunches that are not wilted or dry.  Store base of chives in water for use within 4-5 days.

PREPARATION AND USE

Chives are chopped finely and use as a garnish, sauces, soups, salads and dips.
