DESCRIPTION

Green Beans is valued for their crisp flesh of its pod and the flavour of the seeds inside.

HISTORY AND ORIGIN

The green Beans is thought to be originated in Tropical Central America and has evidence that it was cultivated in the 7th century.

BUYING AND STORAGE

Choose young, firm, freshly coloured Beans which snap easily and contains small seeds. Store in the refrigerator and will keep up to 4 days.

PREPARATION AND USE

Rinse and trim off ends. Pull of strings if necessary. Cut into slices or short length or either leave whole. Can be steamed, boiled, or stir-fry. Serve cold in salads.

VARIETY

BROAD:   Large flat green pod with pale green Beans inside.

                       BUTTER:   Long, straight to slightly curved, creamy yellow pod.

FRENCH:   Small, flat, tender and stringless Beans. Green pods and small seeds.

                        PURPLE:    Similar to Runner Beans but shorter and it's light to dark purple in colour. Great for salad.

                        RUNNER:    Long, rough green skin Beans with strings and with flat seeds. Some varieties of Runner has no strings.

SNAKE:   It's a long, rounded thin Beans that grow up to 40cm. They are also called 'Long-Podded Cow Bean or Cow Pea, and Yard Long Bean.

STRINGLESS:  It's a pencil long Beans with round smooth skin pod and rounded seeds.
